In this workshop we will learn about Scherenschnitte art which means ‘scissor cuts’ in German. The negative space is just as important as the positive in this paper cutting class! We will learn all about the Scherenschnitte technique of paper cutting and the historical influences that help tell stories through this intricate paper cutting art form. We will layer, build, and fold to add dimension to our two dimensional materials!

The first day of class we will search through recycled books to find which one will become your own to alter. We will then build into them to create hidden compartments and interject hidden messages within. Each day we will experiment with new materials and techniques to use inside your book’s pages. We will use gesso, watercolor, acrylic paint, collage, pen and ink, typography, and even draw coded design messages. Creative prompts will be used as jumping off points into the artistic process! Artists that inspire this class are Sabrina Ward Harrison and Dan Eldon.

Our students will learn about the colorful world of Batik in this textile based art class. Our instructor will teach you the basics of using hot wax application and water-based dyes so you can create a dynamic color wheel using batik techniques. Next, students will create a “white line batik” by using a stained glass style design and learn more about the wax removal and batik dye processing. As students learn more about the wax resist technique they will move into multi-colored dying and color theory associated with their batik dying projects. Join us for this very new and exciting fiber arts class!
