Description

This week students will add their own creations to The Art Garage! In this class we will work collaboratively to create installation art specifically to fit the space of The Art Garage. Students will able to walk through the outdoor space while experiencing and viewing their art. Their specially designed shade sails that will hang up outside, providing shade and comfort for others all summer long! We will also work together to make stained glass like drawings that will be permanently displayed in the garage door windows.

Description

This week, The Art Garage is ready to bring on installations made by it’s students! From designing and planning, to creating and installing, The Art Garage instructor will support the students through the process. A collaborative masterpiece of colorful fabric will hang, when completed, from the ceiling to be viewed from down below. We will weave rainbows of colors throughout the outdoor fence, incorporate special ceramic symbols, messages of affirmation and inspiration to share with many artists to come! This week the artists will leave their signature each contributing their own ceramic bead to build The Art Garage’s very own totem pole. Bring your vision in and transform The Art Garage!

Description

While learning and advancing ceramic techniques this week, students will create functional ceramics for an outdoor installation adding their own special touches that will make a permanent art mark here at The Art Garage! Join us as we learn about and use ceramics to create fence planters, plant stakes and labels, and even some fairy and gnome homes for our favorite garden friends! Many art creations we make this week will be installed at The Art Garage, but each student will also have a couple special items to take home.

Description

Design and create interactive art at The Art Garage. Make a permanent and unique hopscotch, tic-tac-toe and other games in our outside space! Artists will be able to create art that will survive the test of time by painting directly onto the concrete outside! We will also work large scale on a class mural by painting onto panels that will be prominently displayed at The Art Garage.

Description

This week is all about creating art for the public to see and it will also be displayed at The Art Garage. Learn about the Yarn Bombing movement and practice your yarn bombing skills! Create a hanging piece of art with recycled plastic caps while learning how to be resourceful as an artist and help the environment at the same time. As a class, students will bring nature into their art as they design, plan and work together build a colorful tipi with large branches and yarn for all young artists to use! Artists will make their permanent signatures at The Art Garage as they choose a color of the rainbow and paint their own parking block that will be admired by all! Students will learn designing and planning large scale work, skills to work collaboratively, painting techniques, finger knitting, and the power of displaying their art publicly.

Learn basic construction techniques, safe woodworking methods, painting in the outdoors and the urban farming movement! Work together as a team to create a more versatile space for the community at The Art Garage! We will build wooden planter beds and learn how paint can be used to weather the elements and decorate stunning, utilitarian objects for our shared space. This work will stay at The Art Garage as a permanent installation for you and your family to come back to visit!

Description

Each week, the instructor will give a short demo on different watercolor techniques at the beginning of class. Students will paint at least one painting each week with individualized instruction. Class will focus on different concepts including value, color theory and composition. Additionally, class will explore other themes such as complementary color schemes, gradated washes, combining collage and watercolor, texture and atmospheric perspective. All materials will be supplied for our students. However, students can bring their own supplies if desired.

Description

In this teen and tween workshop we will talk about examining our own identities, what makes us unique, and about how to express ourselves through art. While exploring our individuality we will learn basic printing techniques, create prints made from collagraphs, and make our own wheat paste posters. Students will be able to leave their mark on The Art Garage by learning how to post their wheat paste posters on our building.

Description

You don’t need a printing press for this printmaking workshop! Gelli plates are made of a unique plastic that allows artists to create fast drying, chemical free, complex prints that can be used to make books, greeting cards and artwork you’ll want to hang on your walls! We will use cardboard, styrofoam, stencils (some that we make ourselves) and collaging techniques to create wonderful masterpieces. Students will learn about complex layering, texture, paper masking, and more in this exciting new printmaking class at The Art Garage!

Description

Let’s be friends and make art together! What can we learn from some of the world’s most famous friends? We’ll look to the Minions, Dora & Boots, Spongebob & Patrick, Nemo & Dory, Shrek & Donkey, Anna & Elsa, and the Harry Potter crew for inspiration as we examine what makes a good friend. This class will explore the depths of friendship and acceptance through partner and group work, and find inspiration from literature with themes about friendship. Students will create beautiful monoprints to use in a collaborative mural, as well as individual artwork about what makes them special! Students will complete printmaking, collage, and other mixed media projects… all while helping develop their social and emotional development!

We will spend the week learning handbuilding techniques in order to create functional ware like cups and plates we can use in our kitchens at home. Alter scale and dimension, proportion and perspective, to create larger-than-life images! Students will use squeegees to push, pull, and scrape paint like Gerhard Richter, and create large scale Heather Galler inspired dogs using brilliant oil pastels!

Description

Join us at The Art Garage and get your twirl and curl on with paper quilling! Quilling is named for the feather like shapes and curls created in this structured paper technique. Through step by step instruction students will learn to fold, roll, crimp, curl and shape paper to create a three dimensional design through the art of quilling. Students will work on color, line and composition through drafting, planning and building with paper. We can make our fancy creations into a shadow box, put them on a wall, and surely admire the complexity of layers we’ve designed this week!

In this five day class, students will take a crash course in art history. A multitude of different movements and artists will be covered, with each day focusing on a specific period of art. By creating Artist Playing Cards your child will learn about the great masters, such as Da Vinci and Picasso, as well as a few lesser known names that may even be new to parents! The week will conclude with one large work of art made in the style of your child’s favorite artist.

Did you know the tusk of a Narwhal is actually it’s tooth!? We will dive deep into the ARTic Ocean to discover all there is to know about our beloved Narwhals. We will paint, draw and build them out of clay this week as we learn facts about and express our love for this wonderful sea creature. We will use the books Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea, Not Quite a Narwhal and Super Narwhal! for inspiration.

This week we’ll take a vacation from reality and dream big as we learn about the Surrealist movement and the artists that defined it, including Dali, Magritte, and Miro! Students will experiment with Surrealist concepts such as spontaneity, the subconscious, and dreams. We’ll engage in experiential art methods to enhance creativity and imagination, including collaborative drawing games and free association. We’ll use our wildest dreams to inspire our bizarre creations! A range of art materials will be used to create strange juxtapositions that defy reality.

Who doesn’t adore that little humanoid creature with the red pointed hat and bushy beard? Let’s take a journey to the underground world of the mysterious, earth-dwelling elemental spirit - the gnome! We’ll be using clay (our own earthen art materials!) to create gnome dwellings, garden gnomes, toadstools, and more to place in our garden or home! We’ll read gnome books and learn about gnome mythology to serve as inspiration for our gnome creations.

In this workshop we will learn about Scherenschnitte art which means ‘scissor cuts’ in German. The negative space is just as important as the positive in this paper cutting class! We will learn all about the Scherenschnitte technique of paper cutting and the historical influences that help tell stories through this intricate paper cutting art form. We will layer, build, and fold to add dimension to our two dimensional materials!

Description

Using exciting gelli plates, students will create one-of-a-kind colorful and expressive prints. Textures, composition and color will be used to create abstract art masterpieces and landscape paintings. It is quite easy to print... and then print again, so your practice prints can be recycled to make your very own art journals! Monoprint techniques will include overlay, textured mark making, and resist. Equal time will be given for guided lessons and experimenting. You are sure to have fun with these silly, sticky, gloppy printmaking Gellis!

Sandy beaches, growing gardens, ice cream cones, watermelon, campfires and s’mores! These are the signs of summer and will serve as inspiration for this class which celebrates this special season! Students will use a variety of materials and techniques to create a work of art that captures a summer scene or summer treat. Projects will include a mixed media beach scene, a painted garden with junk art insects, and colorful ice cream cones topped with puffy paint and rainbow sprinkles!

The first day of class we will search through recycled books to find which one will become your own to alter. We will then build into them to create hidden compartments and interject hidden messages within. Each day we will experiment with new materials and techniques to use inside your book’s pages. We will use gesso, watercolor, acrylic paint, collage, pen and ink, typography, and even draw coded design messages. Creative prompts will be used as jumping off points into the artistic process! Artists that inspire this class are Sabrina Ward Harrison and Dan Eldon.

This week, students will advance their drawing and painting skills as they create beautiful portraits with a colorful twist. The combination of realistic portraiture with textile inspired backgrounds will result in unique, contemporary pieces you will be sure to admire for years to come. Inspired by the work of portrait artist Kehinde Wiley, students will create their own stencils to use as the grounds for their completed masterpieces. This class will combine traditional portraiture methods with fun and modern mixed media patterning techniques.

Follow the animal tracks to The Art Garage and learn about the protected camels, porcupines, lions, tigers, ostriches, bears, and wolves of the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Keensburg, CO! Students will spend the week learning facts about the animals who call The Wild Animal Sanctuary home, as well as the importance of kindness towards our fur and feathered friends. Each day students will bring home a new animal masterpiece created with acrylic, watercolor, pastels and stencils.

Students will explore the creative process by using nontraditional materials and tools to create their completed masterpieces. Participants will challenge traditional notions of drawing by using unconventional methods, lemon juice and heat, charcoal powder, coffee, charcoal resist… and more! Description

Artists will learn about the life and art of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and use his methods of merging image and text with painting and drawing to create visually stunning artworks. Working on wood panels, artists will use collographs, a collage printmaking technique, and combine them with words, letters, numerals, pictograms and logos. Acrylics, oil pastels and gestural drawing will be used to create meaningful, personalized, process-based artworks.

Description

This week, artists will choose their favorite spotted, striped, scaled and speckled animal as inspiration for the creative process. Students will use a variety of materials, and play with patterns and silhouettes to create visually interesting, modern compositions. Students will learn an advanced drawing skill called a grid technique. After learning this grid method, artists can enlarge any image by themselves and draw on a larger scale!
