VISUAL ART PORTFOLIO PREP CLASS

In this class students will develop their visual art portfolios and learn about artistic voice with the help of Art Garage instructors and assistants. We will cover how to talk about the varied approaches each student took to create their portfolios as well as the inspiration behind their artwork. Time will be dedicated to completing art submissions for complete portfolios as well as learning the artistic language behind creating a portfolio. This class is a great fit for any student with an upcoming visual art portfolio audition.

ABSTRACT SCULPTURAL CERAMICS

In this club we will look at various abstract ceramic artists like Ron Nagle, Betty Woodman, and Kenneth Price for inspiration for our own ceramic creations. THE MUSE OF PORTRAITS

In this portraiture class, students will study form in many different artistic ways. We will work with pencils, charcoal, watercolor, acrylic and collage. Students will study their own face in the mirror or from a photo to create self portraits from observation. We will also lead students to learn grid drawing techniques, contour portraits and engage them in lessons about perspective and light. Join us for this extraordinary class that will be sure to create very memorable works of art.

TEEN PRINTMAKING

We will cut, etch and carve into surfaces to make our own printmaking plates. Artists will learn how to use the negative of an original block to depict shapes and forms within their prints. We will learn transfer techniques such as tiling, collagraph and drypoint etching. Join us for this special class where we will even use our own printing press!

OBSERVATIONAL PAINTING

In this series of classes, students will learn to draw and paint from observation. Students will draw objects that are interestingly arranged on the table. Students will learn about perspective, composition, and color. This class is for students of all skill levels and recommended for any students looking to grow their art portfolio.

FAUX RAKU CERAMICS

Raku is a type of Japanese pottery traditionally used in tea ceremonies and known for its distinctive firing process. In this exciting new class, students will create interesting and unique ceramic pieces that mimic Raku while learning glazing, handbuilding, and texturing techniques. We will begin by creating our clay projects in the first week, then we will glaze them the second week, and paint them the third week to give them a unique, crackled finish.

Explore the different ways clay can be transformed into functional art! In this class, you will learn and practice a variety of hand-building techniques as well as get a turn on the pottery wheel! Design and construct a slab box and a coiled pot. Choose a technique to build a mug and learn how to pull a handle! There are no limits when it comes to ceramics techniques. How will you manipulate your clay?

TEEN ASSEMBLAGE SCULPTURES

In this class we will explore and honor what makes us unique by way of creating Identity Assemblages. Students will be able to use a myriad of different materials such as paper, found objects, paper mache and recycled components. We will draw inspiration from the self portrait miniatures of Frida Kahlo as well as the assemblage techniques of Louise Nevelson to create “altar” style artworks with an emphasis on the ornate and expressive.

Artists throughout history have used nature as both inspiration and as tools to learn. Students will take the time to study the life cycle and structure of different types of plants. Then practice observational drawing. By the end of class, students will have a plant journal to use for more observational plant and wildlife drawing practice.
