The Hacienda is haunting - literally! If you like ghost stories and tales of haunted houses, this is the book for you! Set in Mexico in 1820, right after Mexico’s War of Independence, the novel follows Beatriz, the young bride of the wealthy Rodolfo Solorzano, as she is brought to her new husband’s family hacienda. As the story unwinds, the reader learns of scandal, cruelty, revenge, greed, murder, witchcraft, and forbidden love all within the walls of the hacienda and its surrounding village. I was intrigued by the history woven through the story and wanted to know more about the Mexican war of independence and the Mexican Inquisition. I love it when books lead me to wanting to know more about the history of their settings and the cultures involved. I especially appreciated the author’s note at the back of the book. This was a great read. Very suspenseful!
