Description

We’re celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with the traditional Mexican art of Papel Picados! These colorful cut paper banners originated centuries ago with Mayan culture and are used not just as decorations but as a way to tell stories. We will each make banners that tell our own stories with multiple panels of drawings and cut-outs. This class will be adapted to accommodate for varying ages.

Description

Come join us as we dip our toes into the world of experimental collage in honor of Stacey Steers’ “Edge of Alchemy” exhibit opening at the Museum of Contemporary Art. We will create our own art inspired by this local artist’s style and learn some of the basics of collage along the way! This class will be adapted to accommodate for varying ages.

Description

Don’t cry over spilt milk- turn it into your next masterpiece! Based on the wonderful book by Barney Saltzberg, this class will celebrate the art of mistakes. We will make splotches, scribbles, and spills and turn them into wonderful, unique works of art.

Description

Bring your appetite to this yummy class where we will make collages and junk art sculptures of our favorite foods. We will get our tummies rumbling with scrumptious representations of pizza, hamburgers, spaghetti, and whatever else makes your mouth water!

Description

This class will explore ceramic texture techniques and handbuilding skills. Students will create bowls, cups and slab tiles and and then the application of different textures methods with objects and tools. We will even create our own styrofoam press molds to create our own hand designed textures. Textures will be created by hand, with scraping tools and found objects. We will explore how different textures can be made when the clay is at different stages of the drying process. This in-depth look into textures will give students new ideas and new details to complete their ceramic creations.

Description

Handbuilding is a great start for any artist interested in ceramics because it gives the opportunity to work with very few tools and many possibilities. This class will help students build their skills in ceramic forms, planning and handbuilding. We will explore slip and score edges, complex pinch pots, coil building, slab pots and press molds. Students will make both abstract and functional ceramics in this class. Join us if you are interested in learning more about the world of ceramics!

Description

This class will continue to help students that are working towards an art portfolio or visual art audition? We will continue to help guide technical assignments, give constructive lessons and feedback to help aid your student’s application process. We will focus on creativity, observational skill and structured art elements and how to apply these to your student’s individual style. Still life, portfolio construction and passion for art will be heavily discussed and studied. This would be a great opportunity for students inquiring about enrollment at Denver School of the Arts or other visual arts schools. All levels welcome. (September's class is not a requirement for this class' enrollment)

Description

One of the most difficult parts of painting is knowing where to start. This class will explore the importance of planning and sketching. Students will learn how to sketch freehand and quickly through rough exercises that will turn into their final paintings. This class will cover contour sketching, warm up techniques and creative prompts. We will then apply our sketch techniques with watercolor painting additions. This class is great for any artist interested in learning the start to finish of beginning painting.

Description

Charcoal is not simply black and white. In this class, artists will learn techniques to push the boundaries of this medium. Through both abstract and figurative work, we will explore value and texture using subtractive and additive methods. Students will bring in their own photograph from which to reference in their final charcoal drawing. Join us for this exciting study.

Description

In this class, we will learn about Native American art from the southwest! We will take inspiration from Navajo sand paintings and learn about traditional storytelling through art while adapting our artwork to incorporate modern techniques. Lessons will be adapted appropriately for each age group as teachers integrate this theme into their classes.

Description

Here at The Art Garage we believe that it’s never too early to introduce your child to art! In this Toddler & me class, we’ll utilize your young one’s budding curiosity to explore a variety of visual art materials in a safe and supportive environment. Each class will focus on baby appropriate art materials and processes, all while helping your young one develop his or her fine motor skills. Each class will consist of 45 minutes of structured activities.

Using paper, fabric, found objects, and various other materials, create amazing 2 and 3 dimensional compositions. You will layer, glue, nail, and sew your way to creating fantastic art pieces that could express personal or historical experiences, allow exploration in color and texture, or just give yourself time to express your creativity and make something with your own hands!

Description

Come join us as we explore the world of blackout poetry in celebration of National Poetry Day! Starting with existing texts, we will black out words to reveal our own messages, combining the original artist’s creativity with our own in order to create something new. Lessons and materials will be modified in order to be appropriate for each age group.

Description

We will cut, etch and carve into surfaces to make our own printmaking plates. Artists will learn how to use the negative of an original block to depict shapes and forms within their prints. We will learn transfer techniques such as tiling, collagraph and drypoint etching. Join us for this special class where we will even use our own printing press!

Description

Each week, the instructor will give a short demo on different watercolor techniques at the beginning of class. Students will paint at least one painting each week with individualized instruction. Class will focus on different concepts including value, color theory and composition. Additionally, class will explore other themes such as complementary color schemes, gradated washes, combining collage and watercolor, texture and atmospheric perspective. All materials will be supplied for our students. However, students can bring their own supplies if desired.

Description

Come celebrate Kids’ Music Day and get inspired by world famous artist Wassily Kandinsky. Like Kandinsky, we will explore the relationship between sound and visual art as we use experimental painting methods in order to create our own abstract paintings to music!
