In this class students will make plates, bowls, and cups using slab, pinch-pot, and coil techniques. We will find extra inspiration in decoration techniques from Mimbres pottery made in our region. Mimbres pottery was created from A.D. 1000 to 1150 by Native American artists that were early ancestors of the Pueblo Indians that inhabited large portions of Southwestern New Mexico. Even monsters need to hit the reset button every now and again! Join us for this week as we take our monster friends and help them set sail to a destination of their choosing! We'll begin the week by designing a monster, giving them a name, and some personality traits. Then we'll use a variety of media to depict our monsters in all of their favorite destinations - from beaches to mountains, and even a cruise! We are taking a step beyond the traditional summer camp t-shirt tie dye. 'Tie-dye' comes from various traditional forms of fabric dyeing from all over the world which we will learn about in this class. Throughout the week we'll talk about and practice Japanese shibori dyeing and West African indigo dyeing, and we will also be exploring both squirt bottle and immersion dyeing (in buckets). Finally, we will learn how to tie dye beautiful mandala patterns on fabric.
