'Tie-dye' comes from various traditional forms of fabric dyeing from all over the world which we will learn about in this class. Throughout the week we'll talk about and practice Japanese shibori dyeing and West African indigo dyeing, and we will also be exploring both squirt bottle and immersion dyeing (in buckets). Finally, we will learn how to tie dye beautiful mandala patterns on fabric. Students will have a finished piece for each day that we work that they will be able to wear or use, and will leave with a new understanding of cultural movement and sharing through art work!

Odds are your student will have a blast during this chance-based week! We will derive inspiration from the Dadaists and Surrealists - two groups of artists who used the subconscious to guide their art making. Artists will leave it up to chance - such as rolling dice or flipping a handmade 'coin' - to choose their materials and methods for the creation of their artworks. Projects will include using gravity to make an original printmaking plate, Picasso portraits, and surreal mixed media collages!

This week, we'll be celebrating International Dot Day, sparked from an all-time favorite book here at The Art Garage and around the world -'The Dot' by Peter Reynolds! Throughout the week, students will make an incredible 'dot' series, experimenting with printing methods to come up with new ways of making quick, colorful, one-of-a-kind 'dots'. In mono-printing, only one unique print is made from each design, but you can repaint the printing surface and make as many new designs as you like! Unique designs will also be inspired by mandalas, circular designs with radial symmetry and repeated patterns.
