This week we are celebrating Juneteenth in style as students recreate the vibrant contrasting colors, silhouettes, musicality and movement of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Arts Movement. By looking closely at the works of artists like Alma Thomas (b. 1891), Aaron Douglas (b. 1899), Lois Maliou Jones (b. 1905), and Wadsworth Jarrell (b. 1929), students will learn about how black artists have expressed their identity through their work, the social movements they effected, and the ways their practices have influenced modern artists. By understanding this historical context and these foundational concepts, students can experiment with a variety of materials and styles to consider essential questions, such as, “How can art be a shared experience that builds awareness, empathy, and community?”
